“On the Shinkansen returning from Kyoto, a pile of books was nestled in my lap, and a cover with ‘a back’ caught my eye. I picked it up without thinking, and that was my first encounter with ‘Look Back.’ That night, I read it straight through to the end. Though manga and film are different genres, I felt the ‘resolve’ of a fellow creator so intensely. It painfully occurred to me that Fujimoto Tatsuki probably couldn’t move on to his next step without drawing this work. For me, ‘Nobody Knows’ was that kind of work.”
After that encounter, Producer Koide proposed making ‘Look Back’ into a live-action film, and I got the chance to meet Fujimoto-san in person. Above all, I wanted to express my gratitude for him bringing such a work into the world, and for the chance to encounter it in the same era. But on my way back, I was firming up my resolve, thinking, “I can’t NOT do this.”
Filming is wrapped and we’re in editing now, but I believe it will be completed as a work that captures incredibly rich things on screen.”
"Netizens are hyped about Kore-eda directing a Fujimoto Tatsuki adaptation, with some joking about his past works and Chainsaw Man. The "I can't NOT do this" line is also a meme."
