My friend got a short haircut and this is a friendship-ending comment??

My friend, who had long hair, suddenly showed up with a short cut. I was so shocked and flustered that I jokingly said, "Whoa, I feel like I'm having a nightmare LOL." But my friend got super serious and angry, and hasn't unlocked me since... I thought we were close enough to joke around like this, but maybe they didn't think so... Was what I said too harsh?? I just meant it was that much of a drastic change.
