I've been telling the kids around me for a few years now.
In the 80s and 90s, going to college was about earning more than others, but
these days, college has become a place you go to avoid falling behind others.
That's what I say.
I understand reasons for going to college like dreaming of college life, self-realization, or academic research, but
if you're in the bottom 50% of your class with no signs of improvement,
your grades are mediocre, you're going to a mediocre college, and you have no clue which major to pick,
I tell them to just get a high school diploma and get a job.
Whether you go to a random local college or get a high school diploma, the salary difference in the field is negligible anyway.
The cost of graduating college is
30 million won for tuition + 30 million won for living expenses and other costs, totaling 60 million won + 4 years of time.
Instead,
if you talk to your parents and get 40 million won lump sum +
faithfully save your income for 4 years and put it into S&P 500, and then go to the military, by the time you finish your service,
it'll be 150-200 million won.
While your friends are worried about finding jobs after graduation, you'll be contemplating buying an apartment with your own money,
or if you hold on a few more years, you'll become a wealthy person with a much higher monthly income than your peers.
If your sole motivation is money,
higher education has value when the number of highly educated people is small. But
when 80% of people go to college, the distinguishing power decreases.
Especially, diligent high school grads are quite liked by mid-tier companies.
They say they don't scheme as much.
If you're passionate about studying and really want to go to college,
it's also good to go around age 30 after accumulating some assets.
In this capitalist era where AI and automation are deeply advancing,
it's time to give young children proper capitalist education and choices.
이제는 어린 아이들에게 제대로된 자본주의 개념교육과 선택권을 줄때가 되었습니다.
"The thread is a heated debate about whether to go to college or get a head start in the stock market with parental money. Some call it irresponsible gambling, others see it as a viable alternative to the traditional path."
