Former Manchester City forward, Shaun Wright-Phillips, has said that Lionel Messi is a “better player” than Cristiano Ronaldo. He believes the Argentine superstar shows a quality that goes beyond just scoring goals.
According to Wright-Phillips, a footballer cannot be rated as the ‘best player’ based solely on their goal-scoring ability. He said this after mentioning Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane as the ‘best all-around striker’ and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland as the ‘best finisher’:
"It’s impossible for a player who just scores goals to be the best player in the world."
Following these remarks, Wright-Phillips was asked if that meant Cristiano Ronaldo shouldn’t be considered the greatest player of all time by that standard. In response, Wright-Phillips gave the title to Messi and said:
"Ronaldo? Are you talking about CR7? No, no, oh please... are you one of those people who think Ronaldo is better than Messi? For me, it’s always about the ‘eye test’ (what you feel when you see them with your own eyes, beyond just scoring a lot of goals (stats), like how they handle the ball, their movement on the field, and their skills that entertain the viewer). I think the best player in the world should look like Messi, or like (Zinedine) Zidane. The best players have something else special."
Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently plays for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, is nearing the 1000-goal mark. The Portuguese forward has scored 954 goals so far in his professional career, while Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi has scored 896 goals since his first-team debut in 2004.

"Netizens are in full swing debating the Messi vs. Ronaldo GOAT status, with many agreeing with Wright-Phillips' 'eye test' criteria and dismissing the Ronaldo fan base's arguments. Some even brought up R9 as a true baller."
