Our ancestors were actually quite the scholarly bunch, but even so, they couldn't tell tigers and leopards apart. Basically, they just called both tigers and leopards 'beom'. They thought they were the same species just with different sizes and patterns—kind of like how dogs or cats come in different colors—because it's not like they could actually go out and study how these animals lived in the wild..
