When the Austro-Prussian War broke out in 1866, numerous countries participated.

Among them, the Principality of Liechtenstein was obligated to join the war as a vassal of Austria (Habsburg).

They dispatched 80 soldiers.

Fortunately, after just camping out near the Italian border for about 6 weeks, all 81 of them returned safely.

Notice anything weird? Why did the Liechtenstein army, which set out with 80 men, swell to 81 by the time they returned?

According to legend, while the Liechtenstein army was heading home, they met a lost Italian officer. They hit it off so well that the Italian guy decided not to go back to his hometown and just tagged along to Liechtenstein instead.
