This is part of PM Narendra Modi's move to beef up security in response to rising online scams and data leaks in India, the world's second-largest smartphone market. Currently, about 750 million people in India use smartphones.
However, major manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, Google, and Xiaomi are reportedly worried as there is no international precedent and it risks exposing core trade secrets.
Basically telling them to hand over the source code if they want to sell phones in India.
But then again, they can't exactly ditch a market with 750 million people.
