https://m.seoul.co.kr/news/society/2023/01/30/20230130500056 The Ulleung-gun Agricultural Technology Center announced on the 30th that they will be pushing a rice farming restoration project on about 1,400㎡ of county-owned land in Taehari, Seomyeon this year. This is 36 years after rice farming completely disappeared from Ulleungdo in 1987.
Even rice, a Korean necessity, isn't grown in Ulleungdo.
https://m.asiatoday.co.kr/kn/view.php?key=20240827010014565 Due to Ulleungdo's regional characteristic as the easternmost island in the East Sea, the government supports a certain amount of shipping costs for suppliers to prevent essential goods prices from skyrocketing. However, residents unanimously agree that they don't feel the benefits in real life.
So even though the country supports some of the shipping costs, it's still an expensive place.
"People get that shipping costs are rough, but they're pissed that the quality (especially accommodation) is trash for the price. Some folks would rather just take their money and go to Japan."
