The US Federal Customs Agency recently gave tariff-free status solely to seasoned gim (seaweed) among Korean foodstuffs, due to its sharply increasing demand. Other products like Buldak Ramyun, Shin Ramyun, and dumplings... are still getting hit by the tariff laser beam.

Some speculate that due to media influence (Instagram, Netflix, YouTube, etc...), many Americans who previously ate gim like a snack are now eating it wrapped around rice. As imports of Korean seasoned gim increase, rice demand is soaring. Farms in the Southern/Midwestern US, which were dealing with headaches from surplus rice just a few years ago, are now benefiting. This decision is thought to be related to the Trump administration, given its deep connection to rural support rates. Also, for some unknown reason, imports of Korean spicy tuna cans have also significantly increased.
"Gim is officially the 'Black Semiconductor'! The excitement is real, but now everyone's worried the US is going to eat all our supply. Thanks, Teacher Cardi B, for making it too popular."
