A supervisor observing the class asked a student. โDo you know why this globe is tilted?โ The student hesitated and replied. โI didnโt do that, though?โ The supervisor looked at the teacher with a dumbfounded expression. The teacher immediately excused the student. โIt was tilted like that since we bought it.โ After class, the supervisor met the principal and relayed this fact. The principal calmly said. โAs you know, our finances are poor, so we had no choice but to buy a cheap one.โ When I included this passage in <A History of Modern Junk>, it was clearly โhumor,โ but public institution heads reporting on their work turned it into a โdocumentary.โ In institutions governed by โignorance,โ ignorance is the โstandard.โ

"The discussion about systemic ignorance immediately pivoted to whether it was a structural problem, only to be completely derailed by someone blaming cheap Chinese goods and getting called out for pushing an anti-China agenda."
