Mr. Kim (56), a Korean volunteer soldier who participated in the Ukraine War, has died in combat. Mr. Kim, belonging to the International Legion, died in May 2025 during an engagement with Russian forces in Nova Poltavka, Donetsk Oblast.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs received notification of death from the Ukrainian side and is providing consular assistance to the bereaved family. The body will be repatriated to Korea. It is estimated that 7 Koreans have died in Ukraine to date.
The Korean government stipulates that participating in the war without prior permission constitutes a violation of the Passport Act and is subject to punishment.
