SBS has obtained chat logs between Coupang Chairman Bom Kim and key executives. This happened a few years before the massive personal information leak, but it reveals how Chairman Kim, who was then the head of Korea, tried to downplay the incident and shirk responsibility. First, we found evidence that Kim directly ordered the cover-up of the worker's death in 2020. He harshly reprimanded a Coupang executive, instructing them not to leave any record that the deceased had worked hard.
CEO Kim then instructed, "Make sure there are no records left that he worked hard."
This is interpreted as telling the CISO, who manages internal video footage, to check the videos and times when the late Jang Deok-jun wasn't working, ensuring no evidence remains that he was suffering from excessive labor.
In the conversation, CEO Kim said, "Why would he work hard? That makes no sense," and the executive replied, "Several people reviewed the footage."
CEO Kim then left a comment that seemed to belittle the hourly workers, saying, "They are hourly workers. They don't get paid based on performance."
Kim also harshly criticized them, saying, "This won't help us in the National Assembly tomorrow morning." Indeed, the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee inspection was held on October 26, 2020, where Coupang strongly denied the family's claims of death by overwork.
"The consensus is that the CEO is a cold-blooded psychopath who needs to be obliterated by the government or shunned via a major boycott. Users are particularly triggered by the 'black-haired foreigner bastard' and the company's clear efforts to cover up overwork."
