1. The number of people attending church in the UK at least once a month has actually increased, going from 8% in 2018 to 12% in 2024.

2. Surprisingly, this surge is being driven by the younger generation, usually considered more secular. Church attendance for 18–24 year olds quadrupled, soaring from 4% in 2018 to 16% in 2024. This increase was especially dramatic among males (4% -> 21%) compared to females (3% -> 12%). A sort of 'generational sandwich' dynamic (세대포위론) is forming in UK church activity, where the young and the old are relatively religious, and the middle-aged are the most secular.

3. The 'hostility' and 'indifference' toward Christianity shown by previous generations (like the '68 generation) are being replaced by 'openness.' Gen Z, in particular, shows an above-average favorable attitude towards faith. Over half (51%) of 18–24 year olds reported engaging in faith activities in the last six months, compared to 42% of older generations. Also, 40% pray at least once a month.

4. This attraction of younger generations to church isn't limited by race. While ethnic minorities only account for 19% of all churchgoers, this ratio jumps to nearly one-third (32%) among the 18-54 age bracket.

5. However, one notable trend within the church-going population is the decline of the Church of England, the official state religion. Anglicans accounted for 41% of active churchgoers in 2018, but that dropped to 34% in 2024. Conversely, the proportion of Catholics rose from 23% to 31% (+8p), and Pentecostals increased from 4% to 10% (+6p).

6. The change is particularly dramatic among young adults (18–34): only 20% of church attendees in this age group were Anglican, compared to 18% attending Pentecostal churches and a whopping 41% being Catholic. It seems Catholicism is finally getting its revenge on the Church of England after hundreds of years. Source: [source link]

"Young Brits are rushing back to church, but they’re skipping the progressive C of E for the OG Catholic Church because they want strong tradition and organized structure, not wishy-washy leadership. Also, life is just hard and people need community."
