According to officials from the Saudi Arabia Football Federation, the board is reviewing plans to sack coach Hervé Renard and look for a successor ahead of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Officials added that potential candidates include coaches currently in the Saudi Pro League (SPL) or managers who would be new to the Saudi football scene. The successor must be someone who can meet the expectations of Saudi officials and fans and contribute to the prestige and development of Saudi football.
The possibility of Hervé Renard being sacked had been mentioned after the Saudi national team failed to make the 2025 Arab Cup final.
When asked if he was afraid of being fired, he said,
"I have a contract, so I will continue to work. If someone else wants something different, I can't do anything about it.
I will stay, but if someone tells me it's over, I will go somewhere else. That's football."
Renard, 57, is contracted with the Saudi national team until the final of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
The Saudi team lost 1-0 to Jordan in the semi-finals at Al Bayt Stadium last Monday, and will play the UAE in the third-place match tomorrow (Thursday) at Khalifa International Stadium.
"The Saudi FA has zero patience, but fans are just pointing out the spicy parallel: A coach getting fired right after losing to Jordan in a semi-final. We've seen this movie before. 👀"
