The Korea-Japan Undersea Tunnel
Putting aside the utility of the tunnel itself,
surprisingly, the tunnel project was actually moving forward.

Construction was taking place in Saga Prefecture, Japan, which looked like the shortest route between Korea and Japan.
(The photo says Nagoya, but it's a different area with the same name as Nagoya City; it was also a Japanese military stronghold during the Imjin War.)

Currently, the project is halted due to various issues and they aren't digging anymore.

The truth is, neither the Korean nor Japanese governments officially initiated this project.
So who pushed this gigantic project, and how?

The answer is, the Unification Church (Moonies).
Moon Sun-myung, the leader of this massive cult, made
the bizarre statement that 'Korea is the Father Nation and Japan is the Mother Nation',
and claimed they needed to connect the two, which is why he was pushing this project.

The tunnel structure itself still exists, and the Moonies even inspected it in 2016.
If their lobbying power had been stronger, TBH, it might have actually become a national project.
"The real question is: who worries about logistics costs when a cult is digging a submarine tunnel? Hope it has rest stops and ventilation, otherwise that drive is gonna be rough. Maybe it should just be sunk for the subs."
