Kuala Lumpur: The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has announced its plans to introduce the AFC Nations League as part of efforts to expand opportunities for member associations and build a more systematic and sustainable international match structure, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening national team football across Asia. Following the successful reforms recently implemented in the AFC club competition ecosystem, the AFC aims to continue strategic plans that support sustainable growth, competitive balance, and meaningful match experiences, while also improving the stability of national team match schedules. In line with its long-term vision to develop football across Asia, the AFC remains focused on providing high-quality and consistent development paths for its member associations. However, due to difficulties in securing opponents, rising operational costs, and the complexity of travel, it has become increasingly challenging to effectively utilize FIFA A-match windows, resulting in a decline in the sporting value of international matches. These challenges highlighted the need for a more structured, predictable, and sustainable competition system for national teams. After a comprehensive internal review and consultation process, the decision was made in principle to introduce the AFC Nations League. The proposed competition aims to ensure regular and meaningful international matches during FIFA windows, promote competitive balance through tiered matchups, improve cost efficiency through centralized operations, and provide a clearer development path for national teams. Regarding the plan, AFC General Secretary Datuk Seri Windsor John commented: “The AFC Nations League is a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to support the development of our 47 member associations. By introducing a systematic competition platform that provides a more stable match schedule and clear sporting motivation during FIFA windows, we aim to resolve the logistical and cost-related challenges faced by national teams while ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality matches." "Beyond the sporting benefits, we have seen high interest and increasing demand for a Nations League-style competition from commercial partners. This reflects the potential to deliver a more exciting and marketable international football product that appeals to fans, broadcasters, and stakeholders alike." Detailed information regarding the competition format, schedule, and implementation will be announced at a later date following discussions with relevant AFC committees and stakeholder consultations.
"Fans are mostly skeptical, worrying that a 'backwater' version of the Nations League will just overwork star players like Son Heung-min and take away chances to play against top-tier South American teams."
