October 23, 2022. Korean Air Flight KE 631 (Airbus A330-322), registration HL7525. During heavy rain at Cebu International Airport, it overran the runway by 235m, smashed a localizer antenna, and stopped in the grass.
1st landing attempt: Runway visibility blocked by heavy rain. 2nd attempt: Right landing gear damaged. 3rd attempt (holding): Landing gear sensor malfunction. 4th attempt: Runway overrun. Different media outlets reported between 3 to 5 landing attempts.
The plane's nose, lower front, and front wheels were severely damaged. All 173 people on board (including 11 crew members) were rescued safely.
The object sitting on top of the aircraft fuselage is the broken 'localizer antenna.'
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) investigation cited 3 main causes for the overrun: 1) Pilot's forward pitch control 2) Vertical wind control during approach 3) Damage to the right main (deceleration) landing gear (+) Structural issues at Cebu Airport: A 15cm concrete protrusion on Runway 22 contributed to the landing gear damage.
The aircraft was declared a total loss. All major internal parts have been salvaged. It was moved to an empty lot next to the runway, painted green, and left in a state of 'abandonment.'
Korean Air provided the Philippine authorities with funds for the disposal of the wreckage, but they are just leaving it there, claiming they don't have the proper facilities. After Korean Air protested, the vertical tail fin was removed, the logo was erased, and it was covered in green paint.
It's been reported that the aircraft could still be seen from the perimeter road outside the airport as of early this year.
