[BREAKING] Song Sung-mun signs 4-year, $15M deal with San Diego Padres... Includes Rookie of the Year incentive. Kiwoom Heroes infielder Song Sung-mun is heading to the Big Leagues. The San Diego Padres finalized a 4-year deal worth a total of $15 million (approx. 22.2 billion KRW) with Song on the 22. According to AP, Song will receive a $1 million signing bonus. The bonus will be paid in two installments: within 30 days and on January 15, 2027. His annual salary is set at $2.5M for 2026, $3M for 2027, and $3.5M for 2028.
The contract also includes several options. Song holds a $4M player option for the 2029 season, and there is a $7M mutual option for the 2030 season. If the mutual option is not exercised, a $1M buyout will be paid. The performance incentives are also notable. If Song wins Rookie of the Year, his salary for the following season will increase by $1M. Additionally, finishing in the top 5 of MVP voting will add $1M to his annual salary for each remaining year of the contract. Upon completion of the contract, Song will become a Free Agent (FA), and the club will provide interpreter support and round-trip flights between Korea and the U.S.
"Fans are reacting to the massive pay jump compared to KBO, while some are still salty about his past trash-talking controversy. Meanwhile, Kiwoom's reputation as an MLB factory remains undefeated."
