What happens when you try to command a line battle using modern common sense.
I don't have any cheat codes, but as a smart military geek from the future, should I try using modern tactics to make the troops fight as efficiently as possible?
First off, instead of letting infantry get mowed down standing in a stupid line, let's break them up into small squads and deploy them in a spread-out formation to attack the enemy...
...Wait, where the hell did our infantry go?
Sir, the visibility on the battlefield is dogshit because of all the smoke from the black powder guns. Since you split them up, it's impossible to see them.
Plus, because they're all split up, they're sitting ducks for the enemy cavalry. They either got shredded by horsemen, or since nobody was watching, they probably all deserted to go loot something, General.
Hey, where's our cavalry that I sent to flank the enemy?
Well, you sent them off with vague orders like "go flank the enemy side," so they probably took it literally and charged head-on into the enemy flank and got wiped, or they're off looting somewhere too.
What about the special forces units I trained so hard to disrupt the enemy lines?
They're wearing those "special forces camouflage" uniforms so we can't see them anyway. Since they're in small teams, they either got caught and shredded by enemy cavalry, or the survivors deserted and are off looting somewhere.
Wait, why is our own artillery firing at us?
Since the infantry that was supposed to protect the cannons vanished, and we have no idea where our cavalry went...
Our artillery got cut down by enemy horsemen because they had no cover, and now the enemy captured our guns and is blasting us with them.

The deserting cavalry raided it and ran off. Honestly, now that I'm writing this, I feel like things were like that back then even without a modern person in charge.
