Dr. Doom trying to stop the Incursion (two worlds colliding and getting completely wrecked).
The reason the Incursion happens is because Steve Rogers stayed in the past.
There is a way to maintain the multiverse and stop the Incursion, but it can only be solved by killing Steve Rogers.
Steve refuses this, so Dr. Doom tries to kill him.

Dr. Doom's first appearance will be legendary (he wipes out the entire Council of Kangs).
Protagonists of each Marvel universe are maintained as 'Anchor Beings' (Tobey's Spider-Man, Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, Nic Cage's Ghost Rider, etc.).
Because the MCU failed to stop Rogers, the MCU's Anchor, the MCU and various legacy Marvel universes collapse...
...and merge into a single universe (Battleworld).
