In a recent interview, the possibility of Culkin and Columbus returning to the series was brought up. Both departed after 1992โs โHome Alone 2,โ but the franchise kept chugging along all the way to a 6th installment.
Chris Columbus: "They just kept making these really shitty sequels. No offense to anyone, but they completely botched it. Starting from 'Home Alone 3,' it just went straight into the abyss. Out of all that garbage, Part 3 is probably the best of the bunch."
Macaulay Culkin: "The rest of the movies sucked because we weren't in them."
Despite his criticism, Culkin has been vocal about his own ideas for a sequel, explaining his vision in detail during the event.
Macaulay Culkin: "Iโd love a setting where Kevin is older, maybe a widower, and he doesn't have a great relationship with his kid because he's always working. There are two ways to go. One is Kevin accidentally leaves the kid behind and calls his mom saying, โSorry, I finally get how you felt.โ Or he leaves the kid on purpose like, โYeah, this made me the man I am today.โ Then the kid kicks me out and sets traps. Iโd see them all coming because Iโm the pro. It explains why I wouldnโt call the cops or a locksmithโIโm too embarrassed to be getting owned by my kid, and this is my specialty. Ultimately, the house becomes a metaphor for the process of winning the kid's heart back."
Chris Columbus: "But itโs pointless if Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern donโt come back."
Macaulay Culkin: "Joe Pesci is 82. He can still do a pratfall, right?"
"Everyone pretty much agrees the sequels were hot garbage, but the internet is surprisingly protective of Part 3โmostly for the traps and a young Scarlett Johansson."
