The cold wave hitting the entire country has been especially brutal in the Gangwon region. Not only food left outside, but even the seawater has frozen over.
With strong winds blowing, the wind chill at Hyangrobong in Goseong plummeted to nearly 36 degrees below zero.
This morning (the 26th), temperatures around the Daegwallyeong area dropped to near -17ยฐC.
Even during the day, the temperature only rose slightly, staying below -10ยฐC as the extreme cold continued.
At local restaurants, most of the ingredients kept outside have frozen solid.
Corn has turned hard as rocks, fish cake soup in pots has frozen, and even the peppers inside sacks have frozen exactly as they were.
Business preparations are inevitably taking longer than usual.
This morning, Gwangdeoksan in Hwacheon dropped to -22.7ยฐC, and Hyangrobong in Goseong hit -21.3ยฐC.
Hyangrobong also faced winds of 15 meters per second, bringing the wind chill down to -35.9ยฐC.
As of 10 AM, the temperature at Daegwallyeong is -13ยฐC with winds at 4-5 m/s, making the wind chill stay below -21ยฐC.
The surfaces of tetrapods and rocks at the beach have turned white.
The seawater that splashed over them froze instantly in the extreme cold.
With cold wave alerts issued for most of Gangwon except for the East Coast, the cold is expected to last until tomorrow afternoon.
