Kurt Irving, the MC of Valkyria 3, was originally a top-tier elite in the regular army. He wasn't just 'good'; he was a brilliant strategist with a 100% win rate. The game starts with a corrupt superior framing him and getting him demoted to 'The Nameless,' a penal unit. (It was originally for criminals, but due to manpower shortages, it's mostly full of innocent people who were framed or sent there to be disposed of.) Kurt acts as their strategist, and during one mission...
They have to cross a minefield. Kurt had stolen a map from the enemy showing the mine locations, so he knew exactly where they were. He tells the squad to charge, but obviously, everyone hesitates.
The heroine, Riela, says she'll go. She trusts Kurt, clears the minefield, and completes the mission. When she returns, Kurt says absolutely nothing until a squadmate tells him he should at least praise her. It turns out he was silent because he thought, 'I had the map, so it was safe to cross. There was no issue. Also, soldiers are just doing their duty, so it's not something that deserves praise.' That was his mindset... The story follows how this MC gradually changes as he bonds with his squad. Since The Nameless is a unit where everyone is equal regardless of rank, they were able to call out his flaws like that. If he had stayed on the elite track and kept getting promoted, he would've ended up a trash-tier commander and most likely would've been fragged by his own men.
