The Soviet 48th Division, withdrawn from Czechoslovakia, is currently stationed in Kharkiv, Ukraine.
Everything about this unit is unclear. There are no orders, and no superior to give them. They are just surviving day by day through the sheer inertia of a country that no longer exists.
They conduct daily drills just to maintain discipline. Nobody knows who they are training to fight.
Kyiv and Moscow are engaged in a power struggle to snatch up the remains of the Soviet military.
Even the division commander has no idea who he actually answers to.
Pristine equipment sits abandoned in the warehouses.
The biggest problem is the returning soldiers and their families.
Only the lucky families are assigned apartments.
Until the new apartments are finished, they have to live in any abandoned building they can find.
In 1992, the former 48th Division was integrated into the 6th Division of the National Guard of Ukraine. The 6th Division was transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 1999 and reorganized into the 92nd Brigade, which is currently fighting in the war in Ukraine.
