After the massive success of GTA3, Rockstar Games' Sam Houser decided to go all-in with a Black protagonist and a story set in the US slums. The game was built around the soul-filled stories of 80s-90s ghettos.
When it was first released, it faced controversy from both sides—some said it 'only portrayed Black people as criminals,' while others claimed 'a Black protagonist could never succeed.' However, it became a legendary hit, and to this day, CJ (Carl Johnson) is still ranked as the #1 best Black character in American gaming.
The cast features Black people, orphans, people with disabilities, Asians, and illegal immigrants. The synergy of their stories was so incredible that it remains an all-time masterpiece.
