[Gross] My monster design preferences that might be a bit polarizing.jpg
First, if you're gonna pack a work with monsters, don't just fill it with lazy reskins of the same model.
Second, if an enemy is carrying a unique weapon, there has to be a scene where you loot that weapon and use it yourself after killing them.
Third, right before a massive attack, there needs to be a brief 'pause' for effect. For example: Dragon (inhaling fire), Hero: 'Aw, shit.' <- You need that brief beat. Then the Dragon: ROAARRRRRR!!!!!!
Fourth, you gotta show clearly what the monster looks like. I hate that shit where they only peek out from the dark in tiny increments.
Fifth, if the setting is 'a person turned into a monster,' it should show some human traces but look like a monster overall. Don't just throw in a regular zombie, a buff zombie, and a mega-buff zombie and say 'trust me, it's a monster.' You need to show diverse and creative transformations.
Sixth, if it's that 'human turned monster' trope, you gotta include at least one scene where they regain their human consciousness for a moment. Anyway, these were my slightly polarizing tastes.
