First off, crude oil is classified into a few grades based on density, mainly categorized into light oil and heavy oil. Light oil, which has low density, is easy to refine, so the crude price is high while refining costs are low. On the flip side, heavy oil is packed with all sorts of components and is complex to process, so the crude is cheap but refining costs are high.
