Queen Sindeok of the Kang clan, King Taejo's second queen and the first queen to enter Gyeongbokgung after the dynasty's founding, was a devout Buddhist even before marriage. Legend says it was her influence that convinced Yi Seong-gye to turn to Buddhism even before founding Joseon, and she was the one who got Monk Muhak appointed as the Royal Preceptor. It’s also said she played a huge role in Taejo building a private Buddhist hall within the palace despite fierce opposition from the neo-Confucian literati.
