WTF is up with Pilates studios giving you wipes and telling you to clean the machine yourself?

I run a cafe, and I think it's totally obvious that me or my staff wipes down the tables with a cloth after customers spill their drinks or dessert crumbs for the next person. If a customer does that, I'm super thankful, but I'd never think of that as the bare minimum.
