In Japan, it's the norm to exchange New Year's cards if you have any semblance of a social life. People say that if you don't even send a card, it feels like the relationship has grown apart.
But despite that, the numbers crashed from over 4.4 billion in 2003 to 1 billion in 2024.
Considering we're in the age of email and mobile, I guess they held out for quite a long time...
